FAQs Platinum Zoysia

Platinum Zoysia doesn’t need to be mown as frequently as other varieties.

Platinum Zoysia needs 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day all year round to thrive in its environment. This makes it the perfect option as the lawn grass for your Brisbane turf.

Platinum Zoysia is wear tolerant but if it is worn out or damaged, its slow regrowth & recovery can lead to bare patches that may never recover.

Platinum Zoysia is a Zoysia Japonica

Platinum Zoysia is a Zoysia Japonica whereas Sir Grange is a Zoysia Matrella. Platinum Zoysia has a medium-width leaf whereas Sir Grange is a finer leaf variety. Sir Grange wins for shade tolerance only requiring 2-3 hours of direct sunlight per day whereas Platinum Zoysia requires 4-5 hours.

Platinum Zoysia is hard wearing to a point – If your lawn is going to get a lot of wear from kids, dogs, bikes etc. and is likely to get worn out or damaged then Platinum Zoysia may not be for you, it’s slow regrowth & recovery can lead to bare patches that may never recover.

Yes, Platinum Zoysia has a medium drought tolerance and loves being in full sun!

Being a tropical grass, Platinum Zoysia goes into dormancy throughout winter in South East QLD so be sure not to cut it too shortcoming into winter, don’t fertilise it whilst it’s dormant, and just water it if required (if it starts to look dry) otherwise just leave it be & let it do its thing. At the start of spring (early mid-September) Platinum Zoysia throws a lot of purple seed heads, simply mow this off with the catcher on, this is the plant coming out of dormancy & back into its growing season again.

Installing your new turf can be easy!

  1. Prior to laying turf check that the soil surface is not too hot. Lightly wet the soil down if it is hot.
  2. Install your lawn immediately upon delivery. Turf is degrading on the pallet, and it is recommended that all turf should be laid within 4 hours of delivery in summer/spring & 12 hours in winter/autumn, failing to do so can lead to pallet burn.
  3. Begin installing turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or footpath
  4. Butt and push ends against each other tightly, without stretching.
  5. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a large sharp knife to trim corners.
  6. On slopes, place the turf pieces across the slope.
  7. After installing the turf, roll the entire area, this will improve the contact between the turf and soil and help with levelling.
  8. Begin watering the lawn within 30 minutes (in Spring/Summer) and 60 minutes (in Winter/Autumn) of installation. Turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture.
  9. During the first two weeks, avoid heavy or concentrated use of your new lawn, this gives the roots an opportunity to firmly knit with the soil, and ensures that the turf will remain smooth.
